Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid
The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, introduced in 2022 and updated in 2024, is Hyundai's latest electrified innovation. Let’s see how this SUV can outperform the competition and save you money.
Performance
The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is available in two trims, the SEL and Limited. Each has its own set of unique features and capabilities. But regardless of which trim you choose, all versions of the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid include powerful performance thanks to its combination of electric motor and gasoline engine.
This vehicle has an impressive 261 combined electric and gas horsepower, which can tackle many jobs and difficult terrain. Combined with the HTRAC All-Wheel Drive, you get an SUV that can handle anything. The HTRAC system reacts to changing road conditions by adjusting torque, giving you superior grip and stability.
Now, let’s talk about fuel efficiency. Because of its unique combination of electric and gas-powered equipment, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has amazing fuel economy. It has a combined 35 mpg, but you can use the all-electric motor with a 33-mile range when you're just zipping around town. The electric motor gives you just enough power to handle daily tasks or commutes, so you spend less time at the pump and save more money in your pocket.
Features
It wouldn’t be a Hyundai without fantastic inclusions, and the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has features for days. But let’s start with the electric-specific ones.
Since this is a plug-in hybrid, you can charge it at home or on the go. However, you won’t need to spend a lot of time charging—the Tucson can charge with a standard 110V/120V outlet, and with a 240V charger, you can get a full charge in less than two hours.
Another cool feature? Regenerative braking. When engaged, this system recharges your battery by converting the wheels’ mechanical energy into power. It’s a unique feature of the Tucson that makes it an extremely energy-efficient vehicle.
Safety
Let’s talk about safety. Because this is a Hyundai, you get access to the SmartSense suite of award-winning safety features like Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Surround View Monitor.
You also get convenient safety features, like the available Remote Smart Parking Assist, which helps you navigate difficult parking situations automatically. Combine these fantastic safety features with America’s Best Warranty – a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty – and you get a vehicle that will always provide peace of mind.
The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid starts at $38,725.
Tesla Model Y
Now, let’s talk about Tesla’s answer to the electric SUV: the Model Y.
Performance
The Tesla Model Y is available in three versions: Performance, Long Range AWD, and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive. These versions offer varying battery ranges and power, depending on the driver's needs. The Long Range AWD does just what its name suggests, giving you an EPA-estimated 308 miles on a full battery. The RWD version offers a slightly better 320 miles on a full charge. All three versions of the Model Y give you fast acceleration, going from 0 - 60 mph in 6.5 seconds on the RWD, 4.8 seconds on the AWD, and an impressive 3.5 seconds (with rollout subtracted) on the Performance model.
Although the Model Y doesn’t offer a fuel option, it does offer a fast charge for its all-electric engine. A 250 kW Max Supercharging station can charge up to 160 miles of range in 15 minutes.
Features
Tesla's SUV has no shortage of fun and entertaining features. The extra-large center infotainment screen typically gets the most attention. The 15-inch touchscreen gives you easy access to all your favorite apps and music and the built-in apps that come with Tesla’s proprietary software.
If you need cargo space, no worries; the Model Y has plenty. With 76 cu. ft. of cargo space thanks to the front and back trunks, you have plenty of room to haul your gear, pick up groceries, or take your furry friend for a fun day at the dog park.
The Tesla app is also a must-have technology if you’re a Model Y owner. It gives you real-time information about your vehicle, including where you parked, miles left on your battery, controls to lock/unlock/start your vehicle remotely, maps to the closest charging stations, and more.
Safety
Tesla offers superb safety features that it attributes to its all-electric architecture. These features include a low probability of rollover risk and occupant injury due to the position of its battery. Tesla says the position and weight of the battery improve emergency avoidance handling and reduce rollover risk.
If an accident does occur, Tesla’s vehicles have high-impact protection and great structural integrity. These two factors create a safer cabin environment to protect the driver and passengers in a crash. The cabin also includes advanced airbags with less cabin intrusion, meaning they have more space to fully inflate and protect the passengers.
With the Model Y, you can also access modes that enhance your vehicle's convenience and safety. One of these is Sentry Mode, which monitors your vehicle’s surroundings with cameras and sensors and alerts your phone if any suspicious activity is detected.
The Model Y starts at $44,990.
The Tucson vs Model Y: Which is For You?
When considering a new vehicle, especially an electric vehicle, there are many factors to contemplate. Where can I charge it? How long will it take to charge? Can I take it on longer trips?
With the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, you don’t have to worry about being stranded without a place to charge, thanks to its hybrid combustion engine and electric motor. When you run out of battery power, simply use gasoline. We think the 2024 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is the perfect vehicle for any driver looking to dip their toes into the world of electric power!
