Without tires, a car would be practically useless. The condition of your tires can have a major impact on your car’s ability to function. Tires play an important role in how your car steers, handles, accelerates and brakes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some 11,000 accidents occur every year due to bad tires. Dangerous driving conditions and driving on worn tires are two of the most common causes of vehicle collisions. That highlights the importance to keep your Hyundai in tip-top shape by regularly checking and servicing your tires. Our team at Chris Crain Hyundai has put together this list of why it is so important to have your tires regularly rotated even if you drive an all-wheel or four-wheel drive.

Why Rotate Your Tires?

Other than prolonging the life of your vehicle’s tires, regular tire rotation can also make your overall driving experience more enjoyable. Over time and miles, tires start to wear out unevenly. When you rotate your tires, you spread out the wear to help make your ride as smooth as possible. Not rotating your tires can lead to issues with your alignment which will end up costing you more in the long run.

Enhanced Safety

When you have good tires, you are more likely to have control over your vehicle when you’re making sharp turns or have to come to an abrupt stop. Good tires also give your car more friction while on the road which makes it easier to drive in wintry and rainy road conditions.

Fuel Efficiency

Believe it or not, having your tires regularly rotated can increase the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. When your tires are unevenly worn, you have less contact between your tires and the road. This causes your vehicle’s engine to work harder and use more fuel to move. Making sure your tires are regularly maintained and rotated can help increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and save you money in the end.

Types of Rotations

  • Four-Wheel Rotation

This is the most common type of tire rotation. For front-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles, the front tires are moved to the back and the rear tires are moved to the front, but on opposite sides. For rear or four-wheel drive vehicles, the process is reversed- putting the rear tires in the front and moving the front tires to the rear on opposite sides.

  • Five-Wheel Rotation

This method incorporates your full-sized spare tire. You’ll move your spare to the front right and place the rear right on the tire mount. (*note: if your spare is a donut, you do not want to incorporate it in the five-wheel rotation.*)

  • Straight Rotation

This type of rotation moves the front tires to the corresponding rear tires. That means the front right tire goes to the rear right, and the left front goes to the left rear. This is best for people with directional tires, as it keeps the tires spinning in the correct direction.

  • Cross Rotation

Cross rotation is moving your tires to the opposite sides. The front right moves to the rear left and the front left moves to the rear right. (*note: if you have directional tires do not use this method.*)
