THE HITCHHIKER OF HIGHWAY 365

Winding through the southern section of Pulaski County, passing through the little sleepy community of Woodson, AR, is State Highway 365. This lonely road is purportedly the stomping grounds of a famous ghostly hitchhiker. For years, there have been chilling tales of a lone female hitchhiking at night up and down a particular stretch of Highway 365. It could be a rainy summer night, or a cool crisp autumn night, but legend has it she appears on the side of the road in tattered clothes, her hair in disarray. When a car pulls off on the shoulder of the old highway to give her a lift, she will climb in and give the driver a certain address in Woodson to take her to. The hitchhiker offers no conversation, just the address. Once the driver pulls up to the address, he or she turns to the passenger, only to find the young woman has vanished. Bewildered, the driver goes up to the residence and knocks on the door. The resident answers, and the driver gives a description of the hitchhiker, only to learn that that the young woman was the homeowner’s deceased daughter, who died in a tragic car accident decades ago.  There are variations of the spooky tale, but they all end the same: a phantom woman, trying to get home.

WOLF BAYOU BRIDGE (MAMA LOU’S BRIDGE)

To the east of North Little Rock is the tiny farming community of Scott, Arkansas, and one of the most unsettling tales of Arkansas ghostlore: Mama Lou’s Bridge. The actual name of the bridge is Wolf Bayou Bridge, which spans Wolf Bayou on County Road 65, which is also known as Old Arkansas Highway 30. Legend has it that years ago, a distraught woman was driving recklessly with her baby in the car when she lost control and ran her car off the bridge, right into Wolf Bayou. Legend has it that if you visit the bridge at night, park, and then say out loud, “Mama Lou I have your baby!” your vehicle will not start and then you will see the ghostly figure of a woman on the bridge. The apparition appears to be searching for something. Then the figure will start wailing: “Where is my baby, where is my baby?!” At that point, witnesses report, the ghost seems to run off the bridge, with a splash heard in the waters of Wolf Bayou. So if you’re afraid of spirits, don’t be caught on Wolf Bayou Bridge on a lonely night, or you just might run into Mama Lou.

OLD REDFIELD ROAD

Not too far south of Little Rock, deep in the forest, runs the lonely Old Redfield Road.  Old Redfield Road was originally one of the major thoroughfares that went through the small town of Sheridan, whose economy was mostly built on the timber industry and the huge pine forest that once blanketed that part of central Arkansas. Legend has it that Old Redfield Road is a supernatural hotspot. The local residents who live along the old highway have reported sightings of ghosts roaming the road or lingering in an old decrepit cemetery nearby, with passing motorists having reported car radios and other electronics malfunction as they pass the graveyard. The most frightening legend about Old Redfield Road is that of the Headless Car-Chaser. Witnesses report that as you drive a particular stretch of Old Redfield Road, a headless phantom will spring from the woods and chase your vehicle for about a quarter of a mile, keeping pace with the vehicle no matter how much you accelerate. If the vehicle is a pick-up truck, some say the phantom will jump into the bed of the truck and hitch a ride to a particular point then disappear. The story behind this bit of lore is that a workman with one of the timber companies had an accident on the job, which cost him his head. Though his body was recovered, his head tumbled down a hill into thick underbrush, and was never found. So, is the Headless Car-Chaser chasing vehicles or hitching rides in the back of pick-up trucks as a way of seeking help looking for his missing head. We’d rather not stop to ask him.
